Industrialisation of Germany - W Flashcards
How did industrialisation benefit Germany?
This huge expansion of industry led to significant demographic changes:
By 1910 60% of Germans lived in towns and cities.
The population of Berlin doubled between 1875 and 1910 and other cities like Munich, Essen and Kiel grew rapidly.
By 1910 there were 48 German towns with populations over 100,000. In 1871 there had only been 8.
By 1913, coal production has increased by 4x.
By 1914, Germany produced 2/3 of Europe’s steel, in industries such as electrical goods and chemicals.
How was Germany able to industrialise?
Germany was still behind as they had just unified in 1871.
They were supported by powerful German businessmen - the production of iron and coal doubled as a result.
