What was wrong with the SA?
Many SA members were violent thugs who wanted well-paid jobs as a reward now that Hitler was in power.
The SA already had more members than the army. 4 times larger. (400,000 compared to the army’s 100,000).
Why was their leader Ernst Rohm a threat?
Rohm was becoming too powerful. Rohm wanted to combine the army and the SA and control both of them himself.
Rohm was gay, which was seen to destroy the party’s image due to the Nazi’s traditional views.
He wanted another revolution and believed that he could rule Germany.
Why did Hitler need to stay on the army’s good side?
Hitler needed to keep the army leaders happy as he’d need their skills if he wanted the land back that was taken as a result of the Treaty of Versailles.
