Thoracic Membrane/ Abdominopelvic Membrane Vocabulary Flashcards
Vertebrae
Series of small bones forming the backbone
Azygos Vein
Vein running up the side of the thoracic vertebral column draining itself towards the superior vena cava
Aorta
The main artery of the body
Esophagus
Connects the throat to the stomach
Right Lung
Lung on the right side of the body;bigger than the left lung and has more cavities
Right Atrium of the Heart
One of the four chambers of the heart;Place where deoxygenated blood enter heart.
Right Ventricle of the Heart
Pumps blood through pulmonary valve and through pulmonary artery to the lungs
Visceral Pleura
Serous membrane that covers the surface of each lung
Pleural Cavity
The thin fluid-filled space between the visceral and parietal pleurae of each lung
Parietal Pleura
Outer membrane which is attached to the inner surface of the thoracic membrane
Sternum
The breastbone
Spinal Cord
The Cylindrical bundle of nerve fibers and associated tissue that is enclosed in the spine and connects neary all parts of the body to the brain
Mediastinum
Membranous partition between two body cavities or two parts of an organ
Left Lung
Lung on the left side of the body;less cavities than the right lung.
Rib
Each of a series of slender curved bones articulated in pairs to the spine protecting the thoracic cavity and its organs
Left Ventricle of the Heart
Thickest of the heart’s chambers;pumps oxygenated blood to tissues
Visceral Pericardium
The double inner layer of the pericardium
Pericardial Cavity
The potential space formed between two layers of serous pericardium around the heart
Parietal Pericardium
Outer layer of the pericardium
Fibrous Pericardium
Most superficial layer of pericardium
Right Kidney
Kidney that is 2-8 cm lower than the left kidney due to the liver which sits above it
Left Kidney
Kidney on the left side of the body;higher than the right kidney
Spleen
Lymphatic organ that helps fight against infection and is found in all vertebrates
Small Intestine
Intestine that runs between stomach and large intestine, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
Large Intestine
Intestine that helps excrete waste from the body
Costal Cartilage
Bars of hyaline cartilage that serve to push ribs forward and allow thorax walls to be more elastic
Stomach
A muscular organ located on the left side of the abdomen
Peritoneal Cavity
Potential space between the parietal peritoneum and visceral peritoneum
Parietal Peritoneum
Portion that surrounds abdominal and pelvic wall cavities
Duodenum
The First part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach
Gallbladder
Small hollow organ where bile is stored and concentrated before being released into small intestine
Liver
Large meaty organ that sits on the right side of the abdomen
Pancreas
Large gland behind the stomach that secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum. The islets of Langerhans are located in the pancreas which secrete into the blood the hormones insulin and glucagon
Inferior Vena Cava
Large vein carrying deoxygenated blood
Visceral Peritoneum
Is wrapped around the internal organs that are located inside the intraperitoneal cavity
