Thoracic Imaging Flashcards
What is the standard way to X RAY?
Systematic Approach to Reviewing an XRAY
Check the patients’ details!
Assess the quality of the image: ARIEA Anatomical Inclusion Rotation / Position Inspiration Exposure Artifacts
Assess the image: ABCDE Airway Breathing Cardiac Diaphragm Everything else
Condition where azygous vein invaginates into the parenchyma of the lung. Present in ~1% of the population
The Azygous Lobe
Usually following injury to the chest wall (e.g. stab)
Loss of negative intrathoracic pressure, air rushes into the pleural space.
Ipsilateral lung collapses (atelectasis) as no negative pressure to keep it inflated
Pneumothorax
Air trapped in pleural space under positive pressure triggering mediastinal shift
Tension Pneumothorax
Abnormal collection of fluid in the right pleural space leading to obliteration of right costophrenic angle and exhibiting a meniscus.
Pleural Effusion
Pulmonary Oedema vs. Pleural Effusion
Pulmonary edema: fluid build up in alveoli due to congestive heart disease
Pleural effusion: fluid build up in pleura
Pathological enlargement of the heart (more than half of wdith of the chest cavity)
Cardiomegaly
What are Kerley Lines signs of?
Signs of congestive hear failure
