Thoracic and cardiac surgery Flashcards
1
Q
In what ways can the thorax be accessed surgically?
A
- Lateral thoracotomy
- Sternal split
- Thoracoscopy probably more likely to become more available
2
Q
What are the indications for lung lobe removal?
A
- Tumour
- Pneumonia/abscess
- Large emphysematous bullae
- Bronchiectasis
- Bronchial foreign body causing lung consolidation
- Lobe torsion
3
Q
Why would thoracic duct ligation be carried out?
A
chylothorax
4
Q
Lateral thoracotomy access is usually used for which cardiac surgeries?
A
- Pericardectomy
- Congenital cardiac conditions
- Patent ductus arteriosus
- Persistent right aortic arch/other vascular ring anomaly
- Pulmonic stenosis – patch grafting/inflow occlusion
5
Q
What are the indications for pericardectomy?
A
- Recurrent idiopathic pericardial haemorrhage
- Tumour removal?
6
Q
What interventional cardiology techniques may be used for conditions such as pulmonic stenosis?
A
- Balloon valvuloplasty
- Balloon pericardiotomy
- PDA occluder placement
- VSD/ASD occlusion
7
Q
When would pacemaker implantation be considered?
A
- Symptomatic bradydysrthymias that you cannot find a primary cause
- E.g. 2nd/3rd degree AV block, sick sinus syndrome
