Gross Cardiac Pathology Practical Flashcards
What is the difference between eccentric and concentric hypertrophy?
Eccentric hypertophy - due to increased volume- dilation of the chambers- heart bigger overall
Concentric hypertrophy- due to increased pressure- external heart remains the same size but the chambers are smaller (walls thicker) (causes include hypertension and aortic stenosis)
Describe the radiographic differences in left and right sided heart enlargement
Left side- caudal heart straighter and elevation of trachea
Right side- more sternal contact and bulging forward
With degenerative valve disease in small dogs, where would you listen for a murmur? Would the murmur be systolic or diastolic?
Listen over heart apex
Systolic murmur
What are jet lesions?
Can be seen with chronic degenerative valve disease
Jet of blood strikes the endocardium causing lesions- fibrosis and roughening
Can go through to pericardium
