Theriogeniology Flashcards
What is genetics?
Genetics is the science of heredity concerned with behaviour of genes passed from parent to offspring.
What is breeding
The application of principles of genetics for the improvement of desirable and economically important heritable characteristics or traits
What is a gene?
Unit of heredity transferred from parents to an offspring.
A segment of DNA that codes for a specific character.
Gene
What is an Allele
The variant form of a gene; An individual inherits 2 alleles.
What is a locus
A specific formed position on the chromosome who re a particular gene or genetic marker is located.
Inheritance
Genetic transmission if characters from parents to offspring.
Dominant Gene
This is the gene that suppresses the other. It produces a dominant characteristics or trait.
What is a recessive gene
This is the gene suppressed by the dorminant gene
How do you determine the success of breeding
By looking at a shift jn population average phenotype from one generation to the next.
Systems of mating are?
Natural Mating and artificial Mating
Natural mating can be
Controlled, uncontrolled and assisted
Uncontrolled natural mating can be?
Sexual & Assexual
Types of animal monogamy
Serial and lifetime monogamy
Assisted mating has to do with?
Reflex ovulators, ovulatinsynchronization
