Q

What are the 3 parts of Hall’s Theories of Representation?

A
  1. The media often uses stereotypes:
    • this is how stereotypes are created in the first place
  2. Stereotypes reduce people down to oversimplified cliches:
    • for example, ethnic minority groups are stereotyped in a negative way
  3. Stereotypes result from inequality of power:
    • hegemonic power often occurs, and newspapers are often owned by these groups, hence why negative stereotypes of people they can’t relate to occur
    • even women aren’t heads of media, hence why they’re portrayed as vulnerable (another stereotype)
