Q
What are the 3 parts of Hall’s Theories of Representation?
A
- The media often uses stereotypes:
- this is how stereotypes are created in the first place
- Stereotypes reduce people down to oversimplified cliches:
- for example, ethnic minority groups are stereotyped in a negative way
- Stereotypes result from inequality of power:
- hegemonic power often occurs, and newspapers are often owned by these groups, hence why negative stereotypes of people they can’t relate to occur
- even women aren’t heads of media, hence why they’re portrayed as vulnerable (another stereotype)
