Theo 116: The Nature of God 3 Flashcards
God is Holy
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts; the whole
earth is full of His glory.”
Isaiah 6:3
According to Wayne Grudem, what does God’s holiness mean.
“God’s holiness means that he is separated from sin
and devoted to seeking his own honor.”
Wayne Grudem
What does God’s holiness mean for us.
We can live in awe of God.
“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.
And He placed His right hand on me, saying,
‘Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last”
Revelation 1:17
We need to live holy lives
“but like the Holy One who called you, be holy
yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is
written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”
1 Peter 1:15-16
God is Jealous
“For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord,
whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
Exodus 34:14
What does God’s Jealousy mean for us?
Because God is jealous, we should make
nothing else ultimate except Him.
“Whom have I in heaven but You? And
besides You, I desire nothing on earth.”
Psalm 73:25
Because God is jealous, we should put nothing else
before Him.
“He is also head of the body, the church;
and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the
dead,so that He Himself will come to have first
place in everything.” Colossians 1:18
According to Wayne Grudem, what does it mean that God is righteous or just.
That is, He “always acts in accordance with what is right and is himself the final standard of what is right.”
Wayne Grudem
God is righteous and just
“The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are
just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice,
righteous and upright is He.”
Deuteronomy 32:4
God is wrathful.
That is, He intensely hates all sin and will punish it.
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who
does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath
of God rests upon him.” John 3:36
What does God’s wrath mean for humanity
Because God is wrathful, He will eventually pour
it out on all the inhabitants of the earth.
“But because of your stubbornness and
unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath
for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation
of the righteous judgment of God.” Romans 2:5
Because God is wrathful, those who reject Him will spend eternity in hell.
“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the
righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:46
“Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.” Ephesians 4:26.
What does it mean that God is gracious
He is good toward those who only deserve
wrath and punishment. He gives us what we don’t deserve, which is grace.
Do we deserve God’s grace, or can we earn it in some way?
God gives undeserved grace to His elect.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not
as a result of works, that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
Is God’s grace only for the elect?
God’s grace is available to everyone
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing
salvation to all men” Titus 2:11

Psalm 103:8-11
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
Exodus 34: 5- 7
5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”
