Theo 116: Forgiveness Flashcards
Forgive no matter how many times you have been hurt
Matthew 18:21-22
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times.
LUKE 17:3-4
Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, I repent,’ forgive him.
- Forgive no matter how much you have been hurt
Luke 22:33-34
…there they crucified Him . . . But Jesus was
saying, Father, forgive them; for they do not
know what they are doing.
Forgive because you have been forgiven much (The unmerciful servant)
Matthew 18:21-35
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[g]
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[h] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[i] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
What does forgiveness look like
EPHESIANS 4:31-32
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and
clamor and slander be put away from you,
along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Colossians 3:13
…bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
The primary meaning of forgiveness - to cancel a debt that someone owes you; to release them from the debt.
Matthew 18:27
27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
Collossians 1:13-14
His beloved Son, in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He made you alive together with Him, having
forgiven us all our transgressions, having
canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of
decrees against us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
TETELESTAI
Literally translated the word tetelestai means, “It is finished.” The word occurs in John 19:28 and 19:30 and these are the only two places in the New Testament where it occurs. In 19:28 it is translated,
“After this, when Jesus knew that all things were now completed, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, ‘I thirst.’” Two verses later, he utters the word himself:
“Then when he received the sour wine Jesus said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” - John 19:30
The word tetelestai was also written on business documents or receipts in New Testament times to show indicating that a bill had been paid in full.
Romans 8:28-29
And we know that God causes all things to work
together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined
to become conformed to the image of His Son.
2 CORINTHIANS
12:10
Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with
insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with
difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
EPHESIANS 5:20
Always giving thanks for all things in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father.
We need to forgive in order for us to experience God’s forgiveness?
COLOSSIANS 3:13
Bearing with one another, and forgiving
each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
Matthew 6:14-15
“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.”
Mark 11:25
“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your
Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your
transgressions.”
Matthew18: 34-35
34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
Jesus washed Judas’ feet, eventhough He knew that Judas would betray him
John 13:9
Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. Jesus said to him,
He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.
For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, Not all of you are clean.
Physical Effects of refusing to forgive
Psalm 109:17-18
He also loved cursing, so it came to him; and he
did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him. But he clothed himself with cursing as with
his garment, and it entered into his body like water and like oil into his bones.
Mental and Emotional Effects of refusing to Forgive
Jonah 4:1-4
But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. . . . Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.’ The Lord said,
Do you have a right to be angry?
