Messiah
Messiah is a Hebrew word which means “anointed.” Prophets, priests, and kings were anointed with oil
in the Old Testament to set them apart for their special calling and work.
The highest use of the term Messiah was for the expected great Deliverer, the preeminent and unique
Messiah of God.
Christ
Messiah is translated into Greek as Christ.
John 1:41 - “He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which translated means Christ).”
The first century jews were very aware of messianic prophecy and was fervently expecting the messiah to come
Matthew 2:4-5—“Gathering together all the chief
priests and scribes of the people, he inquired
of them where the Messiah was to be born.
They said to him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for this
is what has been written by the prophet.”
Luke 3:15 “Now while the people were in a state
of expectation and all were wondering in their
hearts about John, as to whether
he was the Christ”
Messianic Prophecy fullfilled by Jesus
- Born of the seed of a woman Genesis 3:15
- Born of a virgin Isaiah 7:14
- Seed of Abraham Genesis 22:18

Paul claims that Jesus was the fullfillment of Mesianic prophecy
Romans 1:2-3 - “which He promised beforehand
through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,
concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant
of David according to the flesh.”
Jesus claims that He is the fullfillment of the messianic prophecies.
Luke 24:27—“Then beginning with Moses and with
all the prophets, He explained to them the things
concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”
Born of the seed of a woman
OT prophecy - “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel” (Genesis 3:15).
NT fulfillment - “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20).
Born of a virgin
OT prophecy - “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).
NT fulfillment -“‘for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’ . . . Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which translated means, ‘God with us.’” (Matthew 1:20-23).
Seed of Abraham
OT prophecy - “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” (Genesis 22:18).
NT fulfillment - “The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham” (Matthew 1:1).
The son of Isaac
OT prophecy - “But God said to Abraham . . . through Isaacyour descendants shall be named” (Genesis 21:12).
NT fulfillment - “Jesus . . . the son of Isaac” (Luke 3:23, 34).
The son of Jacob
OT prophecy - “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near;a star shall come forth from Jacob, a scepter shall rise from Israel” (Numbers 24:17).
NT fulfillment - “Jesus . . . the son of Jacob” (Luke 3:23, 34).
Born of the tribe of Judah
OT prophecy - “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples” (Genesis 49:10).
NT fulfillment - “Jesus . . . the son of Judah” (Luke 3:23, 3).
Born of the family line of Jesse
OT prophecy - “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him” (Isaiah 11:1-2).
NT fulfillment - “Jesus . . . the son of Jesse” (Luke 3:23, 32).
Born of the house of David
OT prophecy - “Behold , the days are coming,’ declares the Lord, When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely . . . In His days Judah will be saved” (Jeremiah 23:5-6)
NT fulfillment - “Jesus . . . the son of David” (Luke 23, 31).
The Son of God
OT prophecy - “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You” (Psalm 2:7).
NT fulfillment - “The angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).
Born in Betlehem
OT prophecy - “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity” (Micah 5:2).
NT fulfillment - “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea” (Matthew 2:1) and “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1, 14).
Herod kills the children
OT prophecy - “Thus says the Lord, ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more” (Jeremiah 31:15).
NT fulfillment -“Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years
old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi” 17Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” 19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.… (Matthew 2:16 - 19).
Preceded by a Messenger
OT prophecy - “A voice is calling, ‘Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God’” (Isaiah 40:3).
NT fulfillment - “Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea . . . For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight’” (Matthew 3:1-3).
Would be presented as Israel’s King riding into Jerusalem on a donkey
OT prophecy - “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey,
even on a cold, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).
NT fulfillment - “and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the Mount of Olives, the whole
crowd
Would be sold for 30 pieces of silver
OT prophecy - “I said to them, ‘If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!’ So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages’” (Zechariah 11:12).
NT fulfillment - “and said, ‘What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?’ And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him’” (Matthew 26:15).
That money would be thrown into God’s house and used to buy a potter’s field
OT prophecy - “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them.’ So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the Lord”
(Zechariah 11:13).
NT fulfillment - “And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed” (Matthew 27:5) and “they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place
for strangers” (Matthew 27:7).
He would be forsaken by His disciples
OT prophecy - “Strike the Shepherd that the sheep
may be scattered” (Zechariah 13:7).
NT fulfillment - “And they all left Him and fled” (Mark 14:50).
He would be scourged and pierced through
OT prophecy - “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5)
and “They pierced my hands and my feet” (Psalm 22:16). NT fulfillment - “but after having Jesus courged, he handed Him over to be crucified.”
He would cry out the God has forsaken Him
OT prophecy - “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1).
NT fulfillment - “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’” (Matthew 27:46).
