The burial of Jesus - Evidence that He truly died

A

John 19:33

33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[a] 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[b]

John 19:40-41

40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.

Q

THE PROMISE OF THE GOSPEL

A
  1. A Spiritual Birth

John 3:3-8

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”

4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]

  1. Forgiveness of Sins

ACTS 10:43

Of Him all the prophets bear witness
that through His name everyone who
believes in Him receives forgiveness
of sins.

  1. Eternal Life

John 3:16 -

For God so loved the world, that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Q

Application of the Gospel

A
  1. Repent

Matthew 4:17

From that time Jesus began to preach
and say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Luke 5:32

I have not come to call righteous men,
but sinners to repentance.

Acts 11:18

Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.

Acts 26:19-20

I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision,
but kept declaring both to those of Damascus
first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout
all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles,
that they should repent and turn to God,
performing deeds appropriate to repentance.

  1. Trust

John 6:40 - For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.

  1. Surrender

Acts 2:36

Therefore let all the house of Israel know
for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ -this Jesus whom you crucified.

Acts 16:31

They said, Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved, you and your
household.

Romans 10:9-11

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[a] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[b]
