The Visual Perception System Flashcards
Perception
Refers to the process by which we give meaning to sensory information, resulting in our personal interpretation of that information.
Visual Perception System
Consists of the complete network of physiological structures involved in vision.
Sensation
Is the process by which our sense organs and receptors detect and respond to sensory information that stimulates them. E.g light, vibrations and chemicals.
Reception
Eye receives incoming light from the external environment.
Transduction
Light is converted from electromagnetic to electrochemical energy.
Transmission
Neural impulse is sent to the brain via neurons in the optic nerve.
Organisation
Involves assembling or arranging features of a visual image in a meaningful way.
Interpretation
Is the process of assigning meaning to visual information so that we can understand what we are looking at. Does not explain how we actually ‘make sense’ of visual information.
