Müler-Lyer Illusion Flashcards
Carpenter World Hypothesis
It is similar to architecture and corners in real life and try to apply 3D principles.
Müller-Lyer Illusion
Is a visual illusion in which one of two lines of equal length, each of which has opposite shaped ends, is incorrectly perceived as being longer than the other.
Biological Perspective
Emphasises the role played by our eyes, nervous system and/or brain when we view the illusion. Earliest theory - failure of the brain to properly process different information about eye movements. Scanning participants brain using neuro imaging while they look at the illusion.
Behavioural Perspective
Emphasises the role of learning and past experiences. E.g. We view the illusion as it contradicts what we have learned throughout life about physical reality. Carpentered world hypothesis.
Socio-cultural perspective
Some people live in ‘non-carpentered worlds’ where they have domed houses with roundish doors. These people view the lines as the same length. Race or education and training rather than an individuals specific environment are more relevant factors.
Cognitive Perspective
We use inappropriate mental strategies interpreting the incoming visual information. Incorrectly use the principle of size constancy.
