Attachment theory
Human infants need a secure relationship with an adult caregiver for healthy emotional and social development to occur.
Attachment
The tendency of infants to form an emotional bond to their main caregiver.
British psychiatrist John Bowlby (1907-90)
Describes four key characteristics that are to be present for a strong emotional bond to be formed: proximity maintenance, safe haven, secure base and separation distress.

Infants can form different types of attachment: secure attachment, avoidant attachment and resistant attachment.
