Social development
Changes in an individuals relationships with other people. Form and maintain close relationships.
Biological development
Involves changes in the body and it’s various systems. I.e. Brain, nervous system, puberty, muscles, motor skills.
Cognitive development
Changes in an individuals mental abilities. Changes in perception, learning, motor skills and decision making.
Emotional development
Changes in how an individual experiences different feelings and how they are expressed. I.e. Ways in which anger is expressed.
Heredity
The transmission of characteristics from biological parents to their offspring via genes at the time of conception.
Environment
The experiences, objects and events we are exposed to throughout our lives.
Maturation
The orderly and sequential development changes which occur in the nervous system and other bodily structures.
Principles of readiness
States that unless the necessary bodily structures, be they muscles, bones, or nerves, are significantly mature, then no amount of practice will produce the particular behaviour.
Sensitive period
A time where an individual is more responsive to certain influences from their environment.
