The Urinary System - Nephrons Pt 3 Flashcards
To recap, the nephrons form urine in a three-part process:
Filtration, Reabsorption, Secretion
Filtration
Blood pressure forces water and dissolved substances out of blood and through membranes of the glomerulus
Reabsorption
Substances that the body can use (such as water, glucose, and other nutrients) pass through the renal tubules back into the bloodstream via adjacent capillaries
Salts such as sodium, potassium, and chloride will be either ____ or ____ in the filtrate, depending on the body’s electrolyte balance
reabsorbed or retained
Secretion
Wastes and excess substances are secreted directly into the collecting tubules as urine, which drains through the renal pelvis and ureter into the bladder
