The spinal chord/ lobes Flashcards
Thespinal cordperforms three functions what are they?
- Passes sensory messages from the PNS to the brain
- Sends motor messages (directives) from the brain to the PNS
- Processes quick and easy decisions (reflexes), e.g. pulling a hand off a hot stove
What are spinal reflexes?
Innate responses that are simple and contribute to the person’s safety and survival. Being processed in the spinal cord without the brain saves time and produces a quicker response. Analogy: TASS is down. Mrs Wilson receives information that TASS is down. She doesn’t pass the info on to Mr Valese because it’s a quick and easy decision to make. She tells teachers to mark paper rolls.
Mr Valese – brain
Mrs Wilson – spinal cord
TASS is down – sensory input
what is the cerebrum?
The cerebrum is the big outside part of the brain that looks like sausages. The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of the cerebrum, and it is grey matter. The cerebrum is in two halves, called cerebral hemispheres, separated by the longitudinal fissure. The cerebral cortex can be considered in four areas called lobes. The four lobes are mirrored on each hemisphere.
what is the role of the frontal lobe
- Speech/language
- Abstract thought
- Movement
- Planning
- Judgement
- Problem solving
- Aspects ofpersonality and emotion
- Social skills
what is the role of the occipital lobe
responsible for visual perception, including colour, form and motion.
what is the role of the parietal lobe
- spatial awareness (knowing where their body is in space and where objects in the environment are located)
- sense of touch (pain, temperature, etc.)
what is the role of the temporal lobe
- auditory processes (listening to music, recognising sounds, comprehending speech, etc.)
