Deregowski’s study 1972 Flashcards
how was it conducted?
Sought to investigate different interpretationsExplored how Ethiopian and Western cultures interpreted and identified pictures of animals differentlyMe’en tribe from Ethiopia was selected due to their limited contact with images within their culture
what do we learn from it?
Ethiopian participants misidentified animals when they were not drawn on cloth, Showed that social factors (in this case = culture) are influential in the identifying process of a 2D picture format.
Limitations
Some participants had stressful responses to the stimuli, therefore violating ethical principles, participants were not under same conditions; some viewed the cloth on the ground, others were hung up, consequentially, this may have impacted individuals ability to accurately identify the animals, different sample size in different groups, visual impairment.
strengths
Internal validity was increased as the experimenter was familiar with the people, their language, and the area.
