Central Nervous System Flashcards
what is the role of the Human Nervous System?
eceives information, processes information and sends a decision for the benefit of organism
what is the role of the Central Nervous System
controls the body byreceivinginformation from the peripheral nervous system, processingit andsending a decisionvia the peripheral nervous system
what is the role of the brain
integrates information and makes decisions (voluntary and involuntary)
what is the role of the spinal chord
bundle of nerve fibres (spine is bone encasing it), makes some decisions by itself via “reflexes” and also sends decisions made by the brain (a ‘go between’ for the brain and peripheral nervous system)
what is the role of the peripheral nervous system
communicatesinformation between the central nervous system and the body
what is the role of the somatic nervous system
communicates between the central nervous system and thevoluntary/conscious functions (mainly muscles), receiving info about the external environment, e.g. kicking a ball
what is the role of the autonomic nervous system
communicates between the central nervous system and theinvoluntary/automatic functions (mainly organs), receiving info about the internal environment, e.g. heartbeat
what is the role of the sympathetic nervous system
like an emergency system that becomes active when the person feels threatened, facilitating a ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ response
what is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system
the normal day-to-day system that facilitates bodily functions like digestion (also can facilitate emergency response through ‘freeze’ response, but usually thought of as non-emergency system)
