Define society
- A group of people involved in interpersonal relationships, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.
E.g. ethnic/gender groups and sporting success- Brazil and football.
Define socialisation
- A lifelong process by which children and adults learn norms, attitudes, values and actions of your culture from others.
What are the 2 types of socialisation?
- Primary
- Secondary
Define primary socialisation
- Socialisation during early years of childhood- takes place mainly within family.
Define secondary socialisation
- Socialisation of teenagers and adults.
- Family are less involved.
- Process continues through schools/ peer groups etc.
What skills/ values do children develop as a result of informal play with their family and friends?
- Improved physical skills (coordination).
- Improved social skills (communication).
- Improved cognitive skills (decision making etc).
- Learn to share/ improved morality.
What skills/ values do children develop as a result of their P.E experiences in secondary school?
- Improved health/ fitness.
- Improved physical skills.
- Improved leaderships skills.
- Improved moral skills.
How does secondary socialisation within schools influence children in sport?
- Teachers influence positive/ negative key values.
- Teachers influence choice through their own enthusiasm.
- Demographic influences sports played.
- Peer group preferences leads to following others/ complying with social norms.
Define social processes
- The pattern of growth and change in society over the years.
- Involves different forms of social interactions.
Define social interactions
- When individuals or groups influence the behaviour of each other.
Define social issues
- Social problem= topic that influences society but is opposed to by some individuals.
E.g. racism and inequality.
What are the causes of social issues?
- Lack of money (wages/ prize money).
- Lack of confidence
- Lack of role models
- Myths or stereotypes about capabilities.
Define social control
- Ways in which people’s thoughts, feelings, appearance, and behaviour are regulated in societies.
- Society is made up of institutions: educational, religious, social purpose.
- Social control in sport has, previously, dictated a male dominated involvement. Females being very restricted.
Define social change
- Alterations to society over time.
- Occurs when institutions readjust to meet ‘new needs’ of groups in society such as women, race etc.
E.g. Sport England- ‘This girl can’
‘Kick it out’
Define social structures
- Organised pattern of social relationships and institutions that make up society: class is common structure in the UK.
