What are the general barriers and solutions for participation in sport?
- Lack of time= add physical activity to daily routine.
- Negative social influences= invite family and friends to exercise with you, join a club.
- Lack of motivation= invite a friend/ join a exercise class.
- Lack of skill= select an activity that requires a low level of skill.
- Lack of resources= select an activity that requires few facilities/ limited equipment.
- Family obligations= exercise with the children, attend a gym with a creche.
Common barriers for disabled people in relation to participation in sport
1) Negative self image.
2) Relatively low income.
3) Lack of access in and out of facilities.
4) Lack of organised programmes.
5) Low levels of media coverage/ few role models.
6) Lack of specialist coaching / specialist clubs/ accessible + adapted equipment.
7) Myths and stereotypes.
Strategies to increase participation for disabled people in sport.
- Provide more opportunities for success.
- Increase investment into disabled sports.
- Transport to facilities- improved access.
- Improved technology.
- Increase media coverage and no. of role models.
- Training of more specialist coaches, and setting up more clubs.
- Educating people on myths and stereotypes.
- Designing activities specially for disabled people (boccia and goalball).
- Specialist organisations
- England federation for Disability sport.
- Sport England.
They support and coordinate events/ training.
Define disability
An impairment that adversely affects performance.
Define Integration
Where able and disabled bodies take part in the same activity at the same time (e.g the London marathon).
Define Segregation
People with disabilities participating separately among themselves (e.g Paralympics).
