Define the Social Action Theory
- SAT accepts that sport is produced and developed at a particular time through the relationships and social networks of people who share similar views.
SAT- basics
- Theory says that individuals interact within a society (interactionist theory).
- Individuals can change and influence other’s involvement in sport.
E.g. change sport to match social needs, develop equality within sport.
SAT characteristics
- Considers how sport can impact society.
- Society is created by social interaction.
- Through interaction people create organisations.
- Organisations influence peoples behaviour.
- Interactions lead to change in the social processes.
- Social institutions are the product of the interaction of the people with and within the institution.
- Promotes sport becoming more democratic.
SAT- change
- SAT stresses the fact that people can intervene in social processes and change them.
e.g. people change sprot to match social needs and develop equality within sport.
The Interactionist approach- more detail
- Is a study of how individuals behave in a society.
- Stems from social processes which occur when humans interact.
’ Society is created and maintained through social interaction, and sports are studied in terms of how they are created and given meaning by people’.
Define equal opportunities
Treating people unfairly in relation to disability/ gender/ race/ status etc.
Define discrimination
To give unfair treatment to an individual or group.
- Overt discrimination- obvious.
- Covert discrimination- hidden.
Define stereotyping
Negative image shared by society channelling individuals/ groups away from sport.
Define prejudice
Unfavourable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought or reason.
