What are the 2 parts of the skull?
the cranium and facial mask
What are the 6 cranial bones?
parietal, temporal, frontal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethmoid
Which bones does the parietal bone articulate with?
occipital bone posteriorly and temporal bone laterally
Special features of the temporal bone
houses the cochlea and forms most of the lateral aspect of the braincase
Special features of the frontal bone
it has anterior and superior aspects
Special features of the occipital bone
base of the skull, articulates with atlas (c1) the 1st spinal vertebrae
Special feature of the sphenoid bone
inferior and deep bone that articulates with frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital bones. has a greater and lesser wing
Special features of the ethmoid bone
anterior/inferior aspects and divides nasal cavity into left and right nasal passage!
What are sutures?
immovable joints where 2 bones of the skull connect
Foramen of the skull
- supra orbital (above eye socket)
- infra orbital (below eye socket)
- mental
- zygomatic
Foramen Magnum
at the bottom of the skull where the spinal cord exits the skull
Mandible
lower jaw
Maxilla
forms upper jaw and root of mouth
the anterior 2/3 of the hard palate is the palatine process of the maxilla bone
Palatine Bone
the posterior 1/3 of the hard palate
Vomer
floor of nasal cavity
