Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
What is respiration?
A
- process of gas exchange
- oxygen is brought into body and carbon dioxide is removed
2
Q
Why does speech require respiration?
A
- speech production requires a process which air can be put under pressure and released in a controlled manner
3
Q
Trachea
A
- extends from larynx to bronchi ( which is below)
- flexible and strong structure
- 16-20 rings of hyaline cartilage
- encapsulated and separated by fibro-elastic membrane
- horse shoe shaped
- dorsal side shares membrane with esophagus
4
Q
Bronchi
A
- divides into L and R
- further divides into bronchioles
- divides until microcopic in size
*
5
Q
Alveolar Sacs or Ducts
A
- broncioles open into alveolar sacs
- site of gas exchange
- closely coupled next to blood vessels and capillaries
6
Q
Visceral Pleura
A
- lung is bound by membranous sac made of mesothelial tissue
- form of epithelial tissue that lines the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal cavities
7
Q
Parietal Pleural
A
- lining the thoratic cavity
- friction free interface
- lungs can glide during inhale and exhale
- protects by separating the 2 lungs from each other
8
Q
Pleural Linkage
A
- Visceral Pleural covers outside of each lung and the inner surface of lung is covered by parietal pleural
- small potential b/w the space is filled with pleural liquid which creates negative pressure
- negatrive pressure sucks them together and enables lungs and thorax to function as one unit
9
Q
Lung Tissue is divided into
A
lobes
10
Q
Lobes are separated by
A
deep fissures
11
Q
How many lobes does the right lung have?
A
3
12
Q
How many lobes does the left lung have?
A
2
