The Articulatory System Flashcards
Describe the Source Filter Theory
Source= VF vibration (buzzing sound) Filter= changing the shape of your VT produces different resonant characteristics
- different size cavities have different resonant frequencies when excited by an air stream
- depending on which frequencies are allowed or suppressed the sound we hear is created
What are the mobile articulators? (6)
tongue, lips, jaw, velum, cheeks, pharyngeal walls
What are the immobile articulators? (3)
alveolar ridge, hard palate, teeth
Name the 4 cavities of the VT
oral, nasal, pharyngeal, buccal
Describe the buccal cavity
composed of the space lateral to the teeth, plays a role in oral resonance, a place of food collection for those with swallowing disorders
Describe the oral cavity
bounded anteriorly by lips and posteriorly by facial arches, undergoes the most change in volume during speech due to tongue and jaw movement
back of oral cavity opens to pharynx
What are the lips made of?
muscle, mucous membrane, glandular tissues, and fat
all covered by an epithelium
Why are lips a reddish color?
the lips are highly vascular, lots of blood flow
Where does the upper lip connect?
to the midline of the alveolar ridge
What is the name of the flap of tissue that connects the upper lip to the alveolar ridge?
the superior frenulum
Where does the lower lip connect?
to the midline of the mandible by the inferior labial frenulum
Oral Angle
where the cheek meets the side of the lips
Vermillion Zone
extremely sensitive area (midline)
