The Scientific Method Flashcards
Scientific Method
Investigative technique used to form theories/principles that add to our knowledge of the world we live in.
Hypothesis
Educated guess (to explain an observation)
Theory
A hypothesis that has been proven over and over again.
Principle
A theory that has been supported over and over again
Data
Information and measurements collected during an investigation
Replicate
Repeating an investigation to see if anything changes - more accurate
Variables
A factor that can change during an investigation
Constant
The features of an investigation that remain FIXED
Fair Test
All the variables remain fixed / kept constant except for the one being investigated.
Control
An element that remain unchanged for comparison.
Published Data
In scientific journals/online
Double Blind Test
Neither the investigator nor the test group know who receives which treatment or control.
Sample Size
Number of organisms involved in a trial
Random Selection
Organisms chosen in a fair manner to eliminate bias, representing a wide range of factors.
Blind Test
The test group does not know who receives which treatment
