Enzymes Flashcards
Catalyst
A catalyst changes the speed/rate of a reaction without being used up in the reaction.
Enzyme
A biological catalyst that changes the rate of a reaction without being used up in the reaction .
Enzyme chemical nature
Made of proteins
Enzyme Shape
3d globular shape
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body
Catabolic reaction + eg
The breakdown of large molecules into smaller molecules.
Respiration
Anabolic reaction + eg
The building up of small molecules into larger molecules.
Photosynthesis
Specific
Each enzyme has its own unique shape that will only fit into one particular substrate.
Substrate
The substance that an enzyme works on.
Product
The substance(s) that the enzyme forms.
Active Site
Where an enzyme fits into a particular substrate.
Inhibitors
Chemicals that stop the enzyme from functioning.
Attach to enzymes and destroy/alter their shape. (Enzymes become denatured)
Optimum Activity
Enzyme working at its most efficient rate
Denaturation
Denatured Enzyme
