Excretory System Flashcards
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment within the body.
(E.g. temperature, blood oxygen, water levels)
Filtration (where?)
Blood enters glomerulus under pressure and is squeezed into the Bowman’s capsule (glomerular filtrate).
Everything except blood cells + large proteins are filtered
Reabsorption at Proximal Convoluted Tubule
Glomerular filtrate enters Proximal Convoluted Tubule.
All food molecules are absorbed (glucose, amino acids, water)
Reabsorption at Loop of Henle
Reabsorption of water by osmosis
Reabsorption coming up Loop of Henle
Reabsorption of salt by Active Transport (against the concentration gradient, energy needed)
Secretion at Distal Convoluted Tubule
Release of waste chemicals (H+ ions, toxins, uric acid). Maintains pH balance of the blood.
ADH
Anti-Diuretic Hormone
Produced in Hypothalamus, secreted from Pituitary Gland
Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste from a cell
