The Defence System Flashcards
Pathogen
A microorganism that causes disease
Immunity
The ability to resist infection
Antibody
A protein made by a lymphocyte in response to an antigen
Antigen
Any foreign molecule capable of triggering an antibody response.
Monocyte
Phagocytic white blood cells that engulf and digest pathogens
Phagocytosis
When a monocyte engulfs a pathogen invader
Lymphocyte
Make antibodies - stored in lymphatic system
Induced Immunity
An immune response triggered by the production of antibodies
Passive Immunity
Antibodies we get from birth, in the womb/from mothers breast milk. Provides short-term protection.
Active Immunity
Antibodies that are produced after an infection or vaccination. Provides long-lasting protection.
Vaccine
A non-living dose of the pathogen that is injected into the body. Triggers an antibody response but doesn’t cause the disease.
