Wanted a port to be able to trade with Europe (needed to be free of ice)

Peter’s trip to Europe to learn so he could westernize and modernize.

Capital city built by Peter; used as a port city to trade with Europe.
Ways Peter Westernized Russia:
Potatoes, first newspaper, first museum, first hospital, raise the status of women, new weapons, new clothes, religious and political freedoms, opened schools for navigation - arts - science.
Growing power over Boyars and the Church
Peter was autocratic - took control of Russian Orthodox Church. He forced boyars to shave their beards, dress like Europeans, and move to St. Petersburg.
Mixed Legacy (Peter the Great)
Positives: Ending isolation, expanded territory, built army, and got ports on the Baltic Sea.
Negatives: Reforms died with him, used terror to enforce will, policies led to growth of serfdom.
(Catherine the Great) How she came to power:
German princess, married the heir apparent (insane), used her many alliances to gain power.
