Family Life - Desperately wanted a son, so Henry divorced 2 wives, beheaded 2 wives, one died naturally, and one outlived him all in his quest to get a male heir.

James I
Accomplishments:
Commissioned the translation of the Bible (King James Version)
Did not get along with Parliament because he didn’t consult them.
Puritans
Wanted to purify the Anglican Church of anything Catholic.
New Laws: No dancing or sporting events, shut down taverns and theatres. Sunday was only for religious observance (fined for doing other tasks).
Charles I
Did not get along with Parliament
Often dissolved Parliament so he could rule as an absolute monarch, also fought the English Civil war, and was ultimately beheaded for treason.
Petition of Right
Law is higher than king; Parliament forced Charles I to sign it
English Civil War
Two sides and their names:
Pro Charles: Royalists, Cavaliers
Pro Parliament: Roundheads, Puritans
Oliver Cromwell
Leader of the Roundheads, ruled the Commonwealth of England after the beheading of Charles I, and became a military dictator.
The Restoration
Following the death of Cromwell, Charles II “restored”/returned the monarchy to Great Britain.
The Glorious Revolution
Took place when James II fled to France (since he was Catholic), William and Mary took over the throne with no bloodshed.
William and Mary’s Government
Limited (constitutional) monarchy
English Bill of Rights
Able to take over because they agreed to sign the English Bill of Rights
Cabinet
Developed in Parliament as a group to advise the king, eventually became an official group
Prime Minister
The leader of the cabinet in Parliament, eventually an official position, now the most powerful in the English government
1700s Oligarchy
Only wealthy male property owners were able to vote in England, thus controlling Parliament/country.
