National pride - Europeans loved their culture, thought is should spread, deserved more territory.
Racism - Europeans believed they were superior and would use Afirca more appropriately than the Africans, so that gave Europeans the right to take it.
Need for raw materials - If Industrialization was going to continue, you had to have raw materials to keep it going.
Need for New Markets - If Industrialization was going to continue, you had to have a place to sell products.
Missionaries were wanting to convert to Christianity - Felt it was their duty to tell others about their faith, so they went to Africa and told them.
Things Europe Gained?
Access to natural resources, access to workers, access to trade markets - adds up to more wealth for the dominant countries.

Meeting to decide how to divide Africa, leaders from 14 European Countries, by the end Africa was divided amon 7 European countries (purpose - met because they feared war amongst themselves).
