british Nationality Act which gave all 800 million commonwealth citizens the chance to come to their ‘mother country’ and gain citizenship

why were immigrants encouraged to come to Britain
- at first it was only people who had fought alongside Britain in wars
- many other people keen to see country that had ruled them for so long
- many countries were starting too become independent after WW2 so Britain set out to gain more control
what did the government offer
interest free loans so that people could afford to travel to the Uk
what did Britain need immigrants for in terms of labour
- there was a shortage of labour for low paying unskilled jobs in Britain
- Britain was attempting to rebuild country after war so recruited ppl from Barbados and Jamaica to drive buses, and trains

secure relations in case they needed them again

- government responded by introducing acts
