  • priests scubas JohnBall and John Wycliff began preaching about how the Church was exploiting peasants by charging for sins and being rich with land and property

  • peasants hated John of gaunt (kings advisor) as he was a hated landowner and King Richard was considered young and inexperienced (came to throne 1377)
