- from 1500s onwards Britain had been making vast sums of money from the slave trade
- British traders made money by selling people to work in the West Indies and then America
- set up plantations growing cotton and sugar traded salves for gun iron and glass
Life as a slave
- terrible lives
- 1/3 survived journey then life expectancy 27
- no legal rights bidders for at auction
Abolition movement
-many people began to accept that slavery was not right as they began to compare slaves to white people in factories labelled ‘white slaves’
—others believe it was not Christian such as William wilberforce MP for Hull who set up the anti slavery society
-1792 1/4 of Manchester signed petition
-many working class supported
Women and abolition
- Hannah more write poems in 1787 became a friend of wilberforce due to faith and commitment to reform
- 1833 73 organisations run by women across country
- showed willingness of women to get involved with politics and social reform
Slave resistance
- not just white and middle class
- maroon slaves in Jamaica escaped plantation in 1655
- lived on mountains and Britain had to negotiate to suppress rebellions so that ideas of freedom did not spread
William Wilberforce
- Mp for Hull
- motivated by Christian faith
- held many meetings to persuade and in 1897 presented a partition to parliament with more than Chartists
- secured slave trade act which made it illegal to sell slaves in British empire
Thomas Clarkson
- collected information about conditions aboard ships
- considered slavery as evil
- produced leaflets to show conditions
Granville Sharp
- late 1700s cases do black slaves
- motivated by studies and interest in politics and law
- famous case of Jonathon Strong who was recaptured by former slave master and sent back to West Indies
- highlighted how unclear the slave trade act was 1807
- brought to light the case of Ship ZHong 133 thrown overboard
Olaudah Equiano
- ship masters lave who travelled the world
- lived in England given education and converted to Christianity
- gained freedom and wrote autobiography

- led rebellion 2yrs after French Revolution killed white plantation owners and set fire to crops
- names haiti
Short term success
- although slavery made illegal only instantly freed under 6 rest promised freedom in 4 years
- William wilberforce supportes staged abolition as he believed he should educate slaves however many campaigned for instant release
- many spaces smuggled by former land owners
- with freedom slaves faced horrible living standards
