The Respiratory System - Lung Volumes Flashcards
What is Tidal Volume?
The volume of air breathed in or out per breath at rest
What is Residual Volume?
Th volume of air still left in the lungs after breathing out fully (this prevents the lungs from collapsing)
What is Vital Capacity?
The amount of air that can be forcibly breathed out after fully breathing in
What is Inspiratory Reserve Volume?
The maximum amount of additional air that can be taken into the lungs after a normal breath
What is Expiratory Reserve Volume?
The maximum amount of additional air that can be forced out of the lungs after a normal breath
What is a spirometer trace?
A graph used to show lung volumes
Which volumes increase during exercise?
Tidal Volume
Which volumes decrease during exercise?
Inspiratory reserve volume and expiratory reserve volume
Which volumes are not effected by exercise?
Vital Capacity and Residual Volume
What changes would you expect to a spirometer trace when exercising?
Tidal volume - the waves will get closer together and bigger (because breathing is more frequent and deeper)
