The Cardiovascular system - Heart and The cardiac Cycle Flashcards
Which chamber receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cava?
Right Atrium
Which chamber pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery?
Right ventricle
Which chamber receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein?
Left atrium
Which chamber sends oxygenated blood to the rest of the body via the aorta?
Left Ventricle
Explain the cardiac cycle (start at the right atrium)
Deoxygenated blood is pushed from the right atrium into the right ventricle.
It then leaves the right ventricle via the pulmonary artery.
The pulmonary artery take the blood to the lungs.
Gas exchange occurs at the lungs (carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen).
The pulmonary vein take the oxygenated blood back tho the heart and into the left atrium.
Blood is pumped from the left atrium to the left ventricle.
The left ventricle pushes the oxygenated blood out through the aorta which transports the oxygen rich blood to the body (muscle cells).
Internal respiration occurs (gas exchange at the muscle cell) and the blood takes the carbon dioxide away.
The now deoxygenated blood returns to the heart via the vena cava.
The vena cava passes blood into the right atrium.
What is the pulmonary circuit?
It is where the blood collects oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide at the lungs (pulmonary = lungs)
What is the systemic circuit?
It is where blood supplies oxygen to all of the cells (including muscles) and collects carbon dioxide
