the respiratory system Flashcards
what is respiration
the taking in of oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide
what is the function of the respiratory system
to transport oxygen from the air that we breathe through a system of tubes into our lungs and then into the blood stream
where are the lungs found
in the thorax
what protects the lungs
they are protected by the ribcage and separated from the abdomen by the diaphragm muscle
what surrounds each lung
pleura, a double membrane that contains lubricating pleural fluid
which lung is slightly larger
the right lung
how many lobes does the right lung have
3
how many lobes does the left lung have
2
what do the alveoli do
the alveoli are responsible for the exchange between the lungs and the blood
where does air move from
it moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure (the faster the pressure difference the faster the air flows)
what does the pressure need to be like during inspiration
the pressure needs to be lower in the lungs than the air being breathed in
what does the pressure need to be like during expiration
the pressure needs to be higher in the lungs than the air we are breathing
