A2 Biomechanics Flashcards
Law of inertia (1st law of motion)
An object will remain at rest/in motion unless acted on by an external force
Law of acceleration (2nd law of motion)
Momentum of an object is directly proportional to the force acted upon it (f=ma)
Law of reaction (3rd law of motion)
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The force applied is the same as the reactive force
Motion
A change of location/position of an object with respect to time
Linear motion
The straight line movement of an object or body segment
How is linear motion measured
Distance/displacement
Speed/velocity
Acceleration (m/s)
Time
Velocity
Speed in a given direction
Speed
The rate at which an object has travelled
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes with respect to time
Angular motion
The rotation/circular movement of a body segment or the entire body around an axis or point
Axis of rotation
The imaginary line around which rotation occurs
Angular momentum
The quantity of rotation of a body. Is inversely proportional to the moment of inertia/ angular velocity
Angular momentum = angular velocity x moment of inertia
Moment of interia
The resistance of a body to changes in its rotational motion.
Angular velocity
The rate of rotation around an axis
Angular displacement
The angular position of a body or body part (smallest angle between starting and finishing position
