How was ambition for power a reason for Richard III upsur of the crown?

A
  • quite an unconvincing motive because Richard didn’t seize the crown immediately following Edward’s death and events that unfolded. If he really wanted the throne he would have took it straight away
    -council appointed Richard as protector and also Hastings as protector
    -6 weeks between the arrest of rivers, 30th April, to execution of Hastings 11th June, there was no sings Richard wanted the throne

How was fear of attack by Woodvilles a reason for Richard III upsur of the crown ?

A

-Richard claimed twice that his actions were driven by fear that the woodvilles would be a threat to his power
-justified the arrest of Rivers and Grey by claiming they were plotting to stop him taking a lead role in kings council
-on the 10th June he wrote to the city of York asking for armed assistance because the queen,her relatives and supporters intended to kill any remments of royal blood.
-Richard could have been influenced by Hastings and Buckingham who both hated the Woodvilles

How was fear of loosing Northern lands a reason for Richard III upsur to the crown?

A

-Richard has vast northern territories but not secure. Granted by Edward IV and therefore could be taken away
- he was especially concerned about control over Neville lands because the real heir was George, Duke of Bedford but he couldn’t claim the land because his farther had been acquitted for treason
- if Edward V became king he could never claim the Nevilles land

-Richard argued he was the rightful king because everyone more closely related to Edward IV was burred from the throne, either from illegitimacy or attained for act of treason

Events of Buckinghamshire rebellion

  1. Elizabeth woodville and Margret Beaufort plotted to put Henry Tudor, Buckingham made contact with marget Beaufort and they started to plan a revolt in south wales, linking up with Henry Tudor linking up with the Tudor invasion force when it arrives
    2.this was planned to coincide with the uprising in south of England, Richard III has his own spies out and was able to prepare for Buckingham and Tudor force, putting the Duke of Noffulk in charge of London defence of English and welsh boarders
    3.18th October there was risings in wales which prevents Henry Tudor from landing. Richard’s troops surrendered Buckingham but he was captured and taken being executed 2nd November 1483

Why did Buckingham rebellion fail ?

A

-difficult to coordinate across south, some took actions without waiting for backup
-Henry Tudor fleet had been delayed and scattered by a storm, on realising he was too late and returned to Brittany
-Richard was prepared and had spies
