The nervous system - Paralysis - ch 12 Flashcards
Name 7 types of paralysis?
- paralysis
- flaccid paralysis
- spastic paralysis
- monoplegia
- hemiplegia
- paraplegia
- tetraplegia
Give the definition of paralysis?
Loss of ability to move one or more muscles. It may be associated with loss of feeling and other bodily functions. Paralysis can be partial or complete, temporary or permanent.
Paralysis is not usually caused by problems with the muscles, describe what paralysis is usually caused from
Paralysis is usually caused from the spinal cord or nerves that control muscles.
Does a person with paralysis usually have some sort of nerve damage?
Yes
Name 2 reasons that could cause paralysis?
- cerebrovascular accidents
2. spinal cord injuries
Name 3 other causes of paralysis?
- Bell’s palsy
- multiple sclerosis
- Guillain-Barre’ syndrome
Give the definition of -flaccid paralysis
A condition in which there is weakened or absent muscle tone.
What causes -flaccid paralysis?
By disease or by injury to the nerves associated with the involved muscles.
Give the definition of -spastic paralysis?
spastic paralysis muscles are affected by persistent spasms and involuntary contractions.
Describe what causes -spastic paralysis?
Usually caused by a central nervous system disorder such as cerebral palsy. Tendon reflexes are also exaggerated.
Give the definition of -monoplegia?
In monoplegia only one limb is paralysed.
Give the definition of -hemiplegia?
hemiplegia will have an arm and a leg on the same side of the body paralysed.
What is -hemiplegia often caused from?
A result of a cerebrovascular accident
Give the definiation of -paraplegia?
paraplegia will have paralysis of the trunk and lower limbs. The degree of paralysis will depend on the level of the spinal cord injury.
Name an injury that can cause paralysis?
spinal cord injury
