The human body - tissues - Ch 3 Flashcards
What do you call a group of cells from the same origin that work together to carry out a particular function in the body?
Body tissue
Name the four types of tissue in the human body?
- Epithelial tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
- Connective tissue
Describe the function of the epithelial tissue?
- Covers all external surfaces of the body
2. Lines internal body cavities and organs and forms the basis for certain glands
Name 3 classification types for muscle tissue?
- skeletal
- smooth
- cardiac
What is the primary function of muscle tissue?
- provide motion
2. maintain the body’s posture and produce heat
What is the nervous tissue responsible for?
- Controlling and co-ordinating body functions
What does nervous tissue sense & what does it send?
stimuli and sends impulses to different parts of the body to create a response
What does the central nervous system consist of?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- Peripheral nervous system
What does the peripheral nervous system cover?
all other nervous tissue
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
- Gather signals from all parts of the body
- Send signals to the central nervous system
- Determine an appropriate reaction to the signal
- Responds back through the peripheral nervous system directing a particular action
Where do you find connective tissue?
Between the cells
What is the role of connective tissues?
- To connect
- To support
- To insulate
- To stabilize organs of the body
What is connective tissue mainly made of?
Collagen
Name the four types of connective tissue?
- loose connective tissue
- dense connective tissue
- Cartilage tissue
- other tissue
What is the role of loose connective tissue?
- connecting epithelial tissue to underlying structures
- surrounding blood vessels & nerves
- holding organs in fixed positions
Where do you find connective tissue?
Underneath mucous membranes in areas like the digestive tract and can also be found at the point of connection between skin and muscles.
What is dense connective tissue made up of?
Flexible collagen fibres and is very strong
Name some examples of dense connective tissue?
- Tendons
- Ligaments
- fascia
What is cartilidge made up of?
Various percentages of chondrocytes, elastin and collagen.
What is the purpose of cartilidge?
- To provide structure and support to other tissues
2. To provide a form of padding in the joints
Name 2 other categories of connective tissue?
- Bone or ossceous tissue
2. blood and lymphatic tissue
