The Nervous System (chapter 34) Flashcards
CNS consists of…
The Central Nervous System consists of the brain and spinal cord
PNS consists of …
The Peripheral Nervous System consists of a vast network of nerves that carry messages between the CNS and the rest of the body
Four processes in order to make the correct response to a stimulus.
- Reception (detecting the stimulus)
- Transmission (neurons in PNS carry messages from receptors to the CNS and from the CNS to effectors, such as muscles)
- Integration (incoming messages are sorted and processed and a response is decided upon. occurs in CNS)
- Response (this is carried out by the effectors when they are stimulated by neurons)
Neuron
A neuron is a nerve cell
Threshold
The threshold is the minimum stimulus needed to cause an impulse to be carried.
All or nothing law
The all or nothing law states that if the threshold is reached an impulse is carried, but if the threshold is not reached no impulse is carried.
refractory period
The refractory period is a short timespan after a neuron has carried an impulse during which a stimulus fails to cause a response.
synapse
A synapse is a region where two neurons come into close contact
synaptic cleft
A synaptic cleft is the tiny gap between the two neurons at a synapse
reflex action
A reflex action is an automatic, involuntary, unthinking response to a stimulus.
