Monera (Chapter 21) Flashcards
What are sometimes present in bacteria?
Capsule
Flagellum
Plasmid
Mesosome
Always present in bacteria?
Cell membrane Storage granule Cell wall Cytoplasm Ribosome DNA
Bacterial Types and examples of each
- Round eg. staphylococcus aureus = pneumonia
- Rod eg. Tuberculosis
- Spiral eg. Syphillis
How do bacteria reproduce
asexually by a method called binary fission
Endospores
Formed by bacteria to withstand harsh and unfavourable conditions.
Autotrophic
Autotrophic means an organism makes its own food
Two types of Autotrophic and examples
Photosynthetic eg. purple sulphur bacteria
Chemosynthetic eg nitrifying bacteria
Heterotrophic
Heterotrophic means an organism takes in food made by other organisms
Two types of Heterotrophic and examples
Saprophytic eg. Bacteria of decay
Parasitic eg. disease causing baceria (anthrax)
Saprophytes
Saprophytes are organisms that take in food from dead organic matter
Parasites
Parasites are organisms that take in food from a live host and usually cause harm.
Pathogens
Pathogens are micro-organisms that cause disease
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are chemicals produced by micro-organisms that stop the growth of, or kill, other micro-organisms without damaging human tissue
