The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS made up of and what does it do
The brain and spinal chords
Sorts out information received from the senses and sends messages to muscles or glands so that an appropriate response is made
What does the Nervous system consist of
Central nervous system (CNS) and nerves
What is a nerve
A specialised cell that carries our messages on the form of electrical impulses to and from the CNS
What are the 3 types of neuron called
Sensory
Motor
Relay
What do sensory neurons carry
Impulses from the sensory receptors to the CNS
What is the junction between one neuron and the next called and what does it so
Synapse
Messages are carried across the gap as chemical which may cause an impulse in the next neuron
What do neurons carry
Messages in the form of electrical impulses
What does the cerebrum control
Learning, memory, personality, control of movements
What does the cerebellum control
Balance and muscular co-ordination
What does the medulla control
Rate of breathing and heart rate
What is a reflex action
A rapid response to danger that does not require thinking by the brain
Carried from the sensory receptor to the spinal chord by a sensory neuron
The motor neuron carries the signal to muscle which moves the part of the body out of danger
