The Digestive System Flashcards
State the sites of production of the Mao. Digestive juices in a mammal and what they produce
Salivary glands- amalyse Stomach- pepsin Pancreas- lipase+amalyse Liver- bile Small intestine- lipase
What is digestion
The breakdown of large insoluble food substances into small and soluble ones to allow absorption into the blood stream through the small intestine wall
What is the mechanism of peristalsis
Circular muscles in front of the food RELAX to allow it to pass through
Circular muscles behind of the food CONTRACT to push the food down
What are different enzymes responsible for
The breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats
What is the main function of the small intestine
To absorb the end products of digestion through its wall and then pass them into the circulatory system
Explain how the structure of the small intestine relates to it’s function
Large absorbing surface area
Very long and it’s internal surface is folded and has thousands of tiny , finger like projections called VILLI
Thin walls
Describe the role of villus and their structure
Suited to the jobs of absorption and transport of digested foods
Because each villus:
-is covered by a cellular lining which is one cell thick
-contains a large dense capillary network (into which glucose and amino acids pass)
-contain a tiny lymphatic vessel called a lacteals (that collects the products of fat digestion and passes them into the lymphatic system)
