The Endocrine System Flashcards
Give examples of endocrine glands and the hormones they release
Pituitary gland- growth hormone Thryoid- thyroxin Ovaries- female sex (oestrogen) Adrenal gland - adrenaline Pancreas- insulin
What is the endocrine made up of
Glands that release hormones- allows body to respond to internal or external changes thus maintaining stable body conditions
What are hormones and what do they effect
They are chemical messengers transported in the blood stream
They affect certain target cells/tissues
Hormones stimulate specific target tissues/cells. What do these have
Specific receptors for a particular hormone
What does the blood glucose regulation do
Controls mechanisms to guarantee that a regular supply of blood glucose is available for use by cells, regardless of when and how often food is eaten
What is the role of insulin
Regulates blood glucose - transported in the blood stream to the liver where it activates an enzyme that catalyses a reaction
What is glucagon
A second hormone which is transported to the liver and activates a different enzyme if the blood glucose level drops below it’s optimum concentration
