Respiration Flashcards
What are the raw materials for respiration
Glucose
Oxygen
What is glucose
The chemical energy stored in sugar
How is the energy in glucose released
Through a series of enzyme controlled reactions (called respiration)
What is produced through respiration
Water
Carbon dioxide
What is the word equation for respiration
Glucose+oxygen—> 38 ATP+water+CO2
What is the energy released in respiration used to do
Regenerate ATP (short term store of chemical energy) from ADP + phosphate (Pi)
What can then happen to ATP?
Later be broken down to ADP + phosphate (Pi) and the energy released used for cellular activities (such as active transport etc)
What is aerobic respiration
Respiration in the presence of oxygen
Where does aerobic respiration start and finish
Starts- cytoplasm , where the glucose is broken down into pyruvate
Finishes- If oxygen is available , in the mitochondria
How many ATP’s does aerobic respiration produce
Pyruvate is broken down into CO2 + water and the energy released produces 38 ATP
How can the rate of respiration be measured
Using a respirometer
During anaerobic respiration what is glucose broke down into, (animal+ plant and yeast cells)
Animal cells- lactic acid
Plant+ yeast cells- ethanol+CO2
Where does anaerobic respiration occur
Cytoplasm
How many ATP’s does anaerobic respiration produce
2 ATP
