Q

What is an enzyme

A

A biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of a reaction (they are proteins)
They remain unchanged during chemical reactions

Q

What does it mean by an enzyme being specific

A

The active site is complimentary in shape to the substrate molecules and binds to them specifically- different enzymes are responsible for different reactions

Q

Describe the effect of temperature on enzyme activity

A

Warmer conditions= cause enzyme+substrate molecules to move faster so they meet more which results in increased rates of reaction.
But
When temperature gets to high= active site of enzyme changes shape and can no longer bind with the substrate- becomes denatured.

Q

Describe the effect of PH on enzyme activity

A

There is an optimum PH at which the enzymes work best at
At other PH values the enzyme works less or not all all
Pepsin: optimum-2 Working range-0-3
Amalyse: optimum-7 Working range-4-9
