Enzymes Flashcards
What is a substrate
The molecule which an enzyme acts on
A substrate fits into the active site of an enzyme
What is an enzyme
A biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of a reaction (they are proteins)
They remain unchanged during chemical reactions
Give an example of a synthesis reaction ( when enzymes build up large molecules from smaller molecules)
Substrate Enzyme Product Glucose———->phosphorylase—>starch
Give an example of a degradation reaction (when an enzyme breaks down large molecules into smaller molecules)
Starch———->maltose———–>amalyse (SAM)
What is an enzymes active site
A region of a molecules surface
What does it mean by an enzyme being specific
The active site is complimentary in shape to the substrate molecules and binds to them specifically- different enzymes are responsible for different reactions
Describe the effect of temperature on enzyme activity
Warmer conditions=cause enzyme and substrate molecules to move faster and so meet mor

Describe the effect of temperature on enzyme activity
Warmer conditions= cause enzyme+substrate molecules to move faster so they meet more which results in increased rates of reaction.
But
When temperature gets to high= active site of enzyme changes shape and can no longer bind with the substrate- becomes denatured.
Describe the effect of PH on enzyme activity
There is an optimum PH at which the enzymes work best at
At other PH values the enzyme works less or not all all
Pepsin: optimum-2 Working range-0-3
Amalyse: optimum-7 Working range-4-9
What does optimum mean
The point where each enzyme works best at
